Internet Awesomeness: Zombie Edition

Awesome internet stuff, now with zombies!

* VHS 2 - A Ride in the Park



I couldn't find a complete version of this short, but it's awesome. It features a cyclist with a helmet camera being attacked by a zombie and turns into a zombie himself. The short has very little dialog, but truly captures what a zombie outbreak would look like. I completely recommend watching the entire thing.

* A Zombie Love Song



This is a cute song about a guy who loves his zombie girlfriend. I like the song even though the subject matter is pretty awful. He goes through the things he loves about her that include not having a personality anymore, not having to do the things she liked to do since she doesn't like anything anymore, and not having to spend time with her friends or family. He must not have liked his girlfriend very much in the first place. The ending is fitting and the song is upbeat and catchy.

Funny or Die just came out with this video about how Ash's daily life must go with a shainsaw for a hand. Of course he would refuse to use his normal hand for everything and make everyone else's life miserable. Barbara Crampton shows up with a demon possessed boyfriend at the end. Very fun and I can't wait for more Ash next season of Ash vs. Evil Dead!

Zombie Shorts from Boost Mobile

Although these shorts are ads for Boost Mobile, these videos are short films on living in the zombie apocalypse. I hadn't heard of these before, but I saw them on author Rhiannon Frater's Facebook and discovered it was a whole series.

* Shopping During the Zombie Apocalypse

This one captures how to have fun during the zombie apocalypse. It's reminiscent of Zombieland as the woman relishes in her zombie kills with rollerskates, a high energy soundtrack, and a bit of romance at the end. They don't let zombies ruin their day.

* Getting Gas During the Zombie Apocalypse

Ben is tasked with getting gas for the generator and accomplishes it in an incredibly clever way. First, he sets up a boom box and plays a baby's cries to get the zombies to come out. Then her straps machetes to the bottom sides of his motorcycle to zombie feet and limit their mobility so he can dispatch them at his leisure. Although I could see a lot of accidents happening with that method, it's unique nonetheless.

* A Day at the Office in the Zombie Apocalypse

Mary heads to an office for some phone chargers and has to dispatch some zombies to get them using paper cutters. The meeting room scene is the best and it encompasses my feelings about real work meetings.

I'm a little sad there are only three of them, but these videos are a fun way to market a product with good storytelling and zombies.

Internet Awesomeness: Halloween Edition

Wonderful Halloween themed videos from the internet!

1) Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf by Rob Cantor



I've posted about this song before, but it's never been seen like this. The song is performed by Rob Cantor backed by a band, a full orchestra, a choir, and even a troupe of dancers. It has a new ending and a surprise twist after the song is over. The song as always is hilarious, but even more so with all the added performers and gravitas.

2) Modern Monster Mash by Key of Awesome



Everyone knows the Monster Mash, but this parody song introduces modern monsters such as Leatherface, Jigsaw, Hannibal Lecter, and Michael Myers. Poor Frankenstein just isn't prepared for the amount of carnage they provide. It's hilarious and catchy.

3) IKEA Singapore Commercial - The Shining



This fun IKEA commercial captures the creepy atmosphere of Stanley Kubrik's The Shining perfectly.

4) GEICO Commercial - Horror film



Ah, the hapless victims of horror films and their wonderful decision making skills. I especially like the killer's eyeroll and "Let's hide behind the chainsaws!"

1) Season 6 Finale of The Guild



This is the best ending to this show. I'm not sure if it's truly the end, but everyone is getting the ending they deserve and Codex doesn't even need her video journal anymore. I cried a little at the end and I felt totally satisfied about the series. If you haven't seen the series at all, it's all on Netflix and Youtube. It's about a guild in a World of Warcraft-like game, how they are all socially maladjusted, and how they meet in real life.

2) Bab Seed



I love the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and its super addicting songs written by Daniel Ingram. This one is like creature that lays eggs in my brain and gets stuck in my head for days at a time. It's upbeat, catchy, and fun. I suggest if you like the song to check out the surprisingly awesome show about 6 friends in Ponyville learning about friendship.

3) Kirby Krackle - One More Episode

Kirby Krackle, my favorite nerd band, has come out with a new single that I totally relate to. It's about when your powering through a series and you just want to watch one more episode before stopping for whatever reason. I have powered through so many series this way, it's not even funny. I love that the video is just in the script mimicking famous and popular television shows and it's fun to guess what they all are.

4) Overly Attached Computer commerical



Laina Walker of Overly Attached Girlfriend fame is featured as a computer for Samsung. I love her crazy eyes and how she can just  change her emotions at the drop of a hat. Her various threats to delete your stuff or send dirty messages to your dad are hilarious. I enjoy her humor and I'm glad she's taking advantage of her internet fame.

More zombie songs!

1) Zombies Ate Her Brain by The Creepshow



This cheery brain-nomming song is super catchy and upbeat. The Creepshow feature their psychobilly fashion and aesthetic well with a bit of humor thrown in. The first part of the video is in black and white with a style like the old Universal monster movies, which was a nice homage to the original monster movies.

2) The Zombie Song by Lawrence Cockrill



This song is from Songbook for the Civilized Zombie series that takes place in an alternate Britain that suffered a zombie outbreak in 1984. So the beginning is a PSA for the Lazarus Quincy Institute that rehabilitates zombies to not be ravenous eating machines. I really like the animation style and the actual song is cute and educational.

3) Zombie Love Song by Ray Johnson



This sweet love song is about a zombie that meets a girl online and doesn't just want to eat her brains, but also wants to steal her heart. The braaaaaaaaaaaaains chorus is funny and like zombies trying to sing. The animation isn't super detailed, but illustrates the song well, especially the Pacman clip. Wouldn't you date a zombie if he or she sang this song for you?

4) Never Look Back by The Nearly Deads



I love this song! Their sound is kind of like an indie Paramore. The song is awesome and captures the zombie apocalypse well. Their video is full of zombies and zombie references. Did you notice the Umbrella Corp symbol? or the Zombie Survival Guide being read? I like that it starts of looking like a normal day, but then BAM zombies.

1) Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf



This song and video are so hilarious. I'm personally not a fan of Shia or his movies, but this song makes him a million times more awesome to me. It's a short narrative about Shia attacking and eating people. You are the protagonist as you try to escape him but have to do things like gnaw your leg off because it got stuck in a bear trap. I just about die laughing every time I hear the song, which you can download here.

2) Dr. Who Meets Metal



Listen to the Dr. Who theme played in a metal style by a guy who obviously loves playing music.

3) Reverse Parthenogenesis



This is a cute, morbid short film starring 2 Buffy alums, Amber Benson and Adam Busch, about the antichrist, evil, and relationships. I love seeing these two act again and the film is darkly funny and clever.

4) Juliet (Olde English Remix) by Emilie Autumn



I'm obviously on an Emilie Autumn kick right now. I love her dynamic voice and virtuosic violin playing. This song is about Juliet (of Romeo and) and this remix take out all of the electronic music in the original. It's stripped down and totally believable to the era and thoughts of Juliet. Her voice and the violin are both heard better and capture the feeling of the song better in this version. The mood is much more peaceful and contemplative. You can hear the original version here.

Internet Awesomeness: Zombie Edition

As usual, I share awesome videos with you, but this time, with a zombie theme!

1) Shaun of the Dead in 60 Seconds

This video was made as an homage to Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead (the best zombie romantic comedy ever) and Hot Fuzz, and Brian Lee O'Malley, creator of the Scott Pilgrim series. It's surprisingly accurate and clever. It just brings a smile to my face. I especially love how the artist captured the distinct facial expressions.

2) House vs. Zombies

I love Dr. House, but this clipped made me love him even more. Using his shotgun/axe cane, he dispatches his zombified medical team to save his lady love, Lisa Cuddy. Of course this is only a dream sequence, but I just want to shout "Headshots!" at him.

3) Rotting Hill

This short film is a zombie romantic comedy full of zombie love and stomach churning romance. This is the type of zombie romance that I like: actual zombies in love and doing sweetly gross things for each other. At the end of the video, you can see how all the different CGI effects were achieved, which looked pretty amazing.

4) World War Z Zombie Attack

This scene seems frightening even without any zombie make-up, blood, and effects. The scene itself is awesome, but doesn't really bode well for the World War Z movie. First, the zombies are super fast, which just isn't Max Brooks' style of zombie. His are slow, but no less frightening. Second, the virus immediately makes people into zombies. In the book, the virus incubates for while, allowing people to take international flights, organs to be taken and transplanted, and other ways of spreading it worldwide. It will be interesting to see how the film turns out and how they will fix the problems created by using fast zombies.

More awesomeness from the internets!!!

1) I've loved Kirby Krackle's song Ring Capacity for about a year now. It tells the story of Green Lantern's origins and a battle with Sinestro plus it's super catchy. I was really hoping it would be the song for the new Green Lantern film, but it sadly wasn't. Fortunately, we can all still enjoy their awesome video and hope maybe the next nerd film will feature a song of theirs.

2) One of my favorite Evelyn Evelyn songs is Sandy Fishnets, but it seems to be kind of an ignored song because it's depressing and disturbing. Vince Mascoli made an animated video for the song that I thoroughly enjoy in a simple mostly monochromatic color palate. My favorite part is the ocean sequence which has vibrant colors and a completely different style to greatly differentiate the fantasy world from their bleak reality.

3) Neil Gaiman is awesome. period. So when he makes a video threatening war with Britain if the Onion doesn't get a Pulitzer prize, it's by default awesome. He comes off so crazily charming.

4) This video by Jackson Pearce, author of Sisters Red and the upcoming Sweetly, is made of win. She frankly describes the ridiculousness of the gay marriage debate and urges people to use their voices and make their opinions heard. Gay marriage is now legal in New York (YAY!) which is surprising considering it's a Republican controlled state. Hopefully other states will follow and prove that the Constitution actually matters.
